A more intensive treatment for deeper understanding, healing, and development

Being human is complicated. Our desires are often contradictory, at times clashing with others' wants and needs. Our emotions are not always readily understood by ourselves or others. Our motivations can be murky, mixed, and opposed to one another. We often struggle to see ourselves and others as who we are. We mistake our mental representations of self and other for reality. We may find ourselves repeating the same mistakes in relationships, caught in the traps of cyclical thoughts and behaviors. Some times we may be overwhelmed by our feelings and at other times, disconnected from them. These common challenges of being human may not be readily understood or changed outside the context of a trusting therapeutic relationship. This is where psychoanalysis can help.

In psychoanalysis, we form a unique, emotionally intimate relationship focused on helping you. We work together to better understand your mind, develop your capacity to feel, and expand your freedom of choice in how to live your life. This, of course, is no simple task. There are aspects of ourselves we would rather not look at, much less let other people see. We've been hurt in relationships before, including our most intimate ones, complicating how we relate to others today. It takes time, consistency, and vulnerability within a caring relationship to do the hard work of psychological development. Psychoanalysis provides the time and relational care needed to facilitate deep psychological change and growth.

What makes psychoanalysis

unique from psychotherapy?

Psychoanalysis differs from other forms of psychotherapy in session frequency, format, length, and the training of the analyst (i.e., therapist). Typically, patients are in psychoanalysis 3-5 times per week for 45-minute sessions. In these sessions, patients usually lie down, facing away from the analyst, and are instructed to share whatever they are thinking. By lying on the couch and sharing whatever comes to mind, the patient and analyst are better able to focus on listening and understanding without the distractions of talking face-to-face. The process takes time to unfold, typically occurring over the course of several years.

All analysts have been/are in psychoanalysis themselves and receive years of post-graduate education and close supervision. I am currently in training as a psychoanalytic candidate at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. As part of my training, I offer psychoanalysis at a reduced rate. If you're interested in psychoanalysis, contact me to set up a consultation.
